What age does my child have to be to start learning BJJ?

We start coaching kids as young as six, We coach the kids using the ecological approach, using game based learning to create a fun and engaging way to learn. The younger children don’t get bored and become unfocused.

Can I stay and watch?

Absolutely, we encourage parents to stay and watch, especially for the under 12s. We do ask parents to resist being bench coaches and yell advice from the sidelines. No matter how tempting that may be. The most important thing is the children have a good time and keep coming back. Over time they will develop a great understanding of the techniques used and shouting from the sides won’t help.

What does my child need?

Children will need to wear a bjj Gi with a T-shirt or rashguard underneath. The Gi can be in any colour. To keep the mats clean we ask all members to bring flip flops or sliders to use when they are stepping off the mat. It is thirsty work so they will need to bring a bottle of water and some parents choose to send their children with a mouth guard.

What will they learn?

n bjj there is zero striking! Your child will not learn how to hit or kick someone, they will learn how to stop someone from hitting them, take them to the ground and restrain them. As they become more advanced they will learn “submissions” techniques designed to force our opponent to Tap out. Therefore ending the match. But more importantly they will learn respect, discipline, confidence, resilience and focus.
