A NoGi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class typically starts with a dynamic, movement-based warm-up to prepare the body. This might include drills like shrimping, hip escapes, forward and backward rolls, and bridging. These exercises help improve mobility, coordination, and awareness of body positioning, which are essential for no-gi BJJ.Unlike in gi BJJ, where practitioners use the fabric of the kimono to grip sleeves, collars, and pants, NoGi BJJ emphasizes grips on the body—such as wrist, ankle, and neck control.
Without the kimono, there's less focus on the traditional lapel and sleeve grips, making movement much faster and more fluid. In no-gi, the absence of the gi fabric means you often rely on pressure, positioning, and speed rather than grip strength alone. The pace in no-gi BJJ tends to be faster since there's less material to control, and transitions between positions are more dynamic.
The lack of gi grips means sweeps, submissions, and scrambles happen quickly, requiring heightened awareness, explosiveness, and a more aggressive approach to control and submission. The class is generally high-paced, with a lot of fluid movement and quick exchanges.
